Chester is an historic city on the border of Wales
and England. Its origins can be traced back to the founding of the Roman
fortress of Dewa in 70AD. After the Romans, Chester developed into a busy
port with trade from Dublin. But as the river Dee silted up and trade
declined and the city's development was frozen. Today Chester is a major
tourist attraction and shopping location.
Chester is the most delightful of cities, built by the Romans to control
the native tribes in North Wales and northern Britain. The layout of Chester
still follows the Roman pattern, and defensive walls allow tourists the
chance to enjoy a pleasant walk around the old city centre.
It is claimed that the Eastgate clock is the 2nd most photographed clock
in the world (after Big Ben in London). The famous Chester landmark was
built in 1897 to mark the Silver Jubilee of Queen Victoria and its intricate
iron framework, designed by architect John Douglas, is a marvel of ornate
Victorian style. Characteristic of Chester are the Rows, a double tier
of shops formed by projecting the second stories of the buildings along
the main streets.
Chester is the county town of Cheshire, England. Situated on the River
Dee, close to the border with Wales, Chester is one of the best-preserved
walled cities in the United Kingdom. It is the main settlement of the
wider City of Chester, and has a total population of 80,121.
